Last week, we had a fantastic time at the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario. We took in four great productions from the 2015 Season: Hamlet, The Sound of Music, The Adventures of Pericles*, and The Taming of the Shrew. The shows were fabulous. The kids, who had never seen Hamlet before, were quite intrigued by the source and context of the famous lines they’d heard elsewheres, particularly Jonathan Goad’s key monologues. They were likewise delighted by the fantastic perfomances of The Sound of Music, especially Stephanie Rothenberg’s Maria and Anita Krause’s Mother Abbess. Since The Adventures of Pericles provided the basis for our March BreACK! 2014 story, Bearicles, the kids rejoiced to see the play enacted by grown-ups, Evan Buliung and Deborah Hay, as opposed to stuffed bears. And, the madcap Taming of the Shrew [with even more Deborah Hay!] left everyone jolly.
While they’re a little tired from their trip, the kids are already angling for a return trip in the fall to catch a few of the other productions, particularly She Stoops to Conquer, and The Alchemist.
What to do now that the plays are over? Remember them, of course, and think about them a little more deeply. To that end, we’ve come up with a little printable Theatre Review Sheet for the kids to fill out after the shows. Go ahead and click on the image or the link below and print out a couple of Theatre Reviews for yourselves!!

And, join us on Thursday for the kids’ favourite places to shop, eat and stay in Stratford.
*Note to parents of younger children, The Adventures of Pericles has some adult themes that you may want to discuss with your kids before the production.
